‘Cowardly act’: four people facing charges in robbery, beating of homeless men in Okanagan
Police in Penticton are calling it a “cowardly act” after two homeless men were swarmed by a group of people, beaten and robbed on March 14.
Cst. James Grandy said in a media release that the RCMP’s Targeted Enforcement Unit (TEU) arrested four suspects, all of whom hail from Penticton.
“Both victims suffered severe injuries as a result of the robbery, and had several valuables stolen,” Grandy said.
The four suspects were arrested between March 18 and 19.
Kevin Walter-Hughes, 50, faces several charges, including assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and two counts of robbery.
He is known to police. Court records show Walter-Hughes has 29 prior convictions.
Kaleb Royer, 41, Christina Chappell and Samantha Chappell, 20, each face two counts of robbery.
Walter-Hughes remains in custody while the other three co-accused are released on bail.
“Police are confident this was a targeted incident. This was a very cowardly attack on two vulnerable and defenseless individuals,” said Cst. Ryan Shedden of the TEU.
