Covid vaccine: Supermarket workers, teachers and police officers could be prioritised for jab in next phase

SUPERMARKET workers, teachers and police officers could be prioritised for the Covid vaccine in the next phase.

The UK blitzed its goal of jabbing 15m of the most vulnerable across the country this week – with attention now turning to the next phase of the vaccination programme.

And Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi today told Good Morning Britain that phase two of the vaccination programme will focus on key workers who are coming into contact with Covid, like police officers, teachers and supermarket workers.

He said the committee on vaccinations would also now look at prison wardens being vaccinated with the advice expected to come through in the "coming weeks".

Mr Zahawi said: "They come into much greater contact with people and therefore much greater contact of the virus.

"This is series of sprints, we've done one sprint, we're now in sprint two to get to the end of April – about 32 million people."

Currently, more than three million doses are being given a week. More than 400,000 are being given out every day – this is the seven-day average.

And speaking today, Mr Zahawi also clarified the vaccination priority groups for those with asthma, saying those with serious cases of the condition would be in category four.

Those with oral steroids would be in category six.

He insisted the Government wants to have "offered the vaccine to the whole of the adult population by September."

And he described the next phase as a "marathon" of getting most of the adult population in the UK vaccinated, saying there was a possibility of a winter boost jab.

But the minister later hinted that Brits will have to wait until at least September before they can head back to nightclubs, gigs, cinemas, and theatres.

He also refused to rule out social distancing measures, like mask wearing and the 1 metre rule, carrying on well into the future.

Thousands of clubs and theatres across Britain have been unable to reopen since last March, and many are facing financial ruin.

Britain is eagerly awaiting February 22 when Boris Johnson will outline the plan to get out of the third national lockdown.

Reports claim England’s coronavirus restrictions will finally be relaxed next month.

Government officials are reportedly looking to scrap the slogan: ‘Stay home, Protect the NHS, Save lives’ as the country takes its first steps out of lockdown.

As part of the Prime Minister’s highly anticipated ‘roadmap’ it is understood people will instead be encouraged to take part in more small outdoor gatherings – and even sports – from as soon as March 8.

Potentially before the end of March, outdoor leisure activities including golf and tennis will also be permitted.
