Costa slammed for packing new summer menu with sugar and fats
It’s also a third of the 30g limit suggested by the NHS for men.
Another addition is the Strawberry Cold Brew, £2.95, dubbed a “berrylicious ice drink for a sweet refreshment”. This also contains almost a day’s worth of sugar for adults – 30g, or seven teaspoons – at up to 28.7g. Strawberry Lemonade, at £2.65, has up to 29.3g sugar.
While on the dessert menu, the £2.10 Pink Swirl Meringue contains 39g sugar.
High salt levels of salt are also a concern. Costa’s £3.99 British Chicken and Bacon Pasta Salad had 1.9g – nearly a third of the daily 6g limit recommended for adults. The salad was recently recalled over unlabelled allergens.
British Heart Foundation last week revealed there were 42,384 deaths among under-75s from heart and circulatory diseases in 2017, up from 41,042 in 2014.
Paul Evans, of British Obesity Society and School Health UK, said: “Costa is just another high-street chain with a constant conveyor belt of must-have drinks which consistently exceed adults’ sugar allowances.”
Costa said: “We continue to work to reduce sugar, salt, fat and calorie content. We have options that are less than 100kcal per portion. We’ve made significant sugar reductions in a number of drinks. All nutrition information is available online.”
