A Wisconsin family is mourning the suspected coronavirus death of a 34-year-old man who moved to New York to start working as a trader, according to reports.

Donny Fostner left his life and family in Brookfield behind in January to start a new job in the Big Apple as a quantitative trader.

As the pandemic spread, he started checking in with his parents every day to calm their nerves as he lived in the epicenter of the country’s coronavirus outbreak, even sending photos of his temperature, his mother told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

But the daily calls stopped on April 1, one day before Fostner died at a hospital after showing signs that he had contracted COVID-19. However, Fostner, who had no known health conditions, was not screened for the virus after he died as the hospital had no tests to spare, his parents told the newspaper.

“The world has lost a tender soul, and heaven has gained one,” Jenny Fostner said. “That’s my son in a nutshell.”

Fostner, who reportedly graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in nuclear engineering and physics, had worked for DV Trading LLC in New York. Prior to that role, he spent five years as a quantitative trader for Allston Trading in Chicago, according to his LinkedIn profile.

A message seeking comment from DV Trading, a Chicago-based proprietary trading firm with offices in New York and Toronto, was not immediately returned Friday.

Fostner’s funeral will be livestreamed on Facebook Saturday. Only his parents and the family’s pastor will be allowed at the gravesite, while his two siblings and other mourners will be restricted to their cars, his mother said.

“The isolation is really hard,” Jenny Fostner said.

But the grieving mom noted the dozens of friends who have stopped by their home following news of her son’s death, including a crowd of more than 20 during a visit one day after he suddenly passed away.

“There’s an outpouring of people willing to do anything for us, even in isolation,” Jenny Fostner said. “I mean, who has friends like that?”

A funeral home arranged for Fostner’s body to be sent back to Wisconsin, giving his family a sense of “peace and closure,” his mother said.

“That somebody was kind enough and brave enough, so that I can bury my boy at home — I will be forever grateful for that,” Jenny Fostner told the newspaper.

Donny Fostner is survived by his parents, Jenny and Rod, as well as his younger brother and brother, Jake and Megan. Attempts to reach the family Friday were not immediately successful.

Fostner, meanwhile, had been “taking all the precautions” to avoid contracting coronavirus while living in Brooklyn prior to his death, his mother said last week.

“We know he was being so careful too,” Jenny Fostner told WTMJ. “He did not take the subway. He did not take taxis or Ubers.”
