This is the moment a mother and child were saved from drowning at a Welsh beach after the woman fell and hit her head on rocks during a family walk. 

Dramatic footage shows a Coastguard rescue helicopter airlifting two people from the rocks between Langland and Rotherslade on the Gower Peninsula yesterday afternoon. 

The unnamed woman was with her two children when she was injured and faced being trapped by the rising tide.

One of her children stayed with her and tried to comfort her while the other ran back to the beach to raise the alarm.

A spokesperson for Mumbles Coastguard said: ‘On arrival, one adult and two children had been making their way between Rotherslade and Langland over the rocks, when the female adult had fallen and sustained a head injury and was unable to continue the journey.

‘One child had safely returned to the beach to request assistance, the other remained with the casualty.

The spokesperson said the pair were taken to Morriston Hospital for assessment, and added: ‘We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.’ 

The helicopter airlifts two people before they’re taken to hospital for treatment

In Facebook post, Mumbles RNLI said: ‘At 4pm our volunteer crews of both lifeboats were called to assist 3 casualties on the rocks between Langland and Rotherslade.

‘The report from UK Coastguard at Milford Haven was to assist two children and one adult suffering a head injury and cut off by the tide.

‘Both boats proceeded with best speed along with Coastguard Helicopter 187 and Mumbles Coastguard Cliff Rescue team.

The unnamed woman, who was injured on the rocks, risked being trapped by the rising tide at the Gower Peninsula

‘Following an assessment from the UK Coastguard helicopter paramedic, all casualties were winched to safety by the helicopter while safety cover was operated by both boats and Mumbles Cliff rescue team.

‘Both boats returned to station.’

One witness, Anthony Dyke from Newton told WalesOnline: ‘The coastguards cordoned off Rotherslade for a while in the event the helicopter or lifeboat had to land on the beach.’
