King Charles is said to have been completely unaware that Meghan Markle was biracial upon first meeting her, a royal expert has claimed.

The former Prince of Wales is said to have had "no idea" that the Duchess of Sussex was born to a Caucasian father and an African American mother.

It comes from a reported conversation in an upcoming book titled The King: The Life of Charles III, where it is claimed among other things that Charles found Meghan to be "absolutely delightful".

But it appears that Meghan, who the at-the-time Prince of Wales found to be "completely charming", was quite the surprise for the royal.

Author Christopher Andersen detailed their first meeting together and the reaction the new King had when speaking to an American friend.

Andersen writes of the encounter and subsequent reaction: "At the time, Prince Charles had no idea that Harry's new girlfriend was biracial."

He alleges that Charles, speaking to an American friend, said: "Not that it would have mattered at all, of course. But no, I didn't realise that until later."

The upcoming book is set to discuss disputed allegations of racism throughout the Royal Family, something the Duchess of Sussex spoke on during her and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2020.

Author Andersen wrote of the Queen, whose interactions saw her "not once" make a racially insensitive comment, although "the same could not be said for Charles," New York Post reported.

The expert alleged: "For her part, the Queen, who experienced countless up-close-and-personal encounters with people of all races, ethnicities, and religions during her record-breaking reign, appeared utterly devoid of prejudice.

"Not once had she ever been heard to make a racially insensitive comment.

"The same could not be said for Charles, although his gaffes were rare – like the time he told a writer of Guyanese descent that she didn't 'look like' she was born in the British city of Manchester, presumably because she was black and wore dreadlocks."

The Daily Star has approached Buckingham Palace for comment.
