Burnley fan killed in horror head-on car crash as twin brother fights for life

A young football fan was killed in a horrific head-on crash which left his twin brother fighting for his life.

Burnley supporter Oliver James Barraclough, 19, from Cononley, North Yorks died after a collision on the A629 last Saturday.

The 19-year-old was a passenger in a white VW Polo driven by his twin brother William when it hit a BMW XI which was travelling in the opposite direction.

Oliver was pronounced dead at the scene.

His brother was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries, where he remains in a critical condition.

A second passenger in the VW, an 18-year-old man, was taken to Airedale Hospital after suffering "life changing injuries".

The BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and his two passengers, a 63-year-old woman and a seven-year-old girl were also taken to Airedale Hospital with minor injuries.

District councillor Andy Brown, who lives in Cononley, said the tragedy had sent shockwaves through the community.

He said: "Everyone has been left devastated by what happened.

"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young man who died and all those involved."

Floral tributes have been placed at the scene of the accident, which happened on the A629 – near Cononley Lane Ends – on Saturday evening.

One emotional message refers to Oliver's "infectious smile and cheeky smirk".

Police are appealing for any witnesses or dashcam footage of the incident.
