Builder ‘somersaulted’ to his death while climbing in popular UK beauty spot

A builder tragically “somersaulted” 200ft to his death after a rock he was holding gave way while he was hiking with his two best friends, an inquest has heard.

Jack Carne passed away at just 23 after he and his friends were climbing between the Gribin Ridge to Glyder Fawr in Eryri, now called Snowdonia, on February 4 this year.

A rock that he grabbed while climbing tragically landed on him and he ended up falling and suffering multiple injuries, the inquest in Denbighshire, Wales, heard.

Jack’s friend, Mattie Belcher, told the inquiry that after his friend fell down the mountainside he and his other friend, Brandon Smith, tried calling out to him but heard nothing.

"I couldn't do anything, it all happened so fast," he said, according to theBBC.

The pair were forced to wait for four hours on a ledge to be found by a mountain rescue team.

The coroner present at the inquiry said that the group was “fully prepared and experienced” for the crime, and ruled that the Yorkshireman’s death was an accident.

Both Mattie and Brandon said that they always had the right equipment for the climb and added that they were careful about planning routes and checking weather conditions.

The coroner suggested that water erosion, coupled with the weight of Jack’s backpack, may have contributed to his fall

"It is clear to me this is something he loved and he took no risks", he added, describing his death as "an incredibly sad loss of a young man".

Jack’s girlfriend Ann Birks paid tribute shortly after his death, writing on Facebook: “The way we looked at each other was another level. Could not keep my eyes off my beautiful boy, the only person in the room. Soulmates forever and ever and ever.”

A GoFundMe for Jack Carne’s family has raised nearly £13,000 so far, while Jack’s friends have amazingly raised more than £15,000 for the rescue team that found his body in his memory.
