A panicked European Union fears that the UK is “not the last” country to quit the bloc after a European Parliament report into the departure was released this week. The report claims that MEPs could have made a difference in the referendum if they had campaigned in Britain themselves on the side of Remain. They also claimed that Brexit voters did not understand what they were voting for in the 2016 referendum.

Discussing the report, Deputy Political Editor of the Sunday Express David Williamson told talkRADIO that the report shows just how scared the EU remains about another Brexit taking place.

He pointed out that one of the MEPs solutions to Brexit was to create an EU fund to fight future referendums.

He said: “The report gives an incredible insight into the psychological shock that has been suffered at the heart of the Brussels establishment.

“Suddenly there seems to be this wrenching examination of what on earth could be wrong with us that one of the nations of the union chose to withdraw.

“They are looking for more funding, they are looking for an arsenal to stop this type of thing ever happening again.”

TalkRADIO host Nick de Bois responded: “Well going off their retrospective thinking, one thing we didn’t know when we backed Brexit was that we would have been in for billions of quid to bail out those countries under their Covid recovery plan.

“That would have cost quite a lot of money.

“The whole strategy was to make Brexit fail so we can all keep our cosy club in Brussels going.”

Mr Williamson added: “It’s so interesting to see the fear socially that Britain may not be the last of the nations to walk out the exit door.

“There is now a viable alternative that people can now look at.”

In the report, MEPs asked the European Commission to bring forward legislation to allow European political parties to finance future referendum campaigns on EU treaties in order to make it a more equal fight.

The report read: “British citizens had scant knowledge about the European Union and were not adequately informed about the far-reaching consequences of the decision to leave the union.

“Citizens were never given a clear picture of the relationship that their country would have with the EU once it left, and were often misled about the implications of the withdrawal, especially as regards Northern Ireland.”

A UK Government spokesman responded to the report: “The British people voted to leave the European Union, and this government delivered on that result.

“We will go further and faster to deliver on the promise of Brexit and take advantage of the enormous potential that our new freedoms bring.”

This comes amid concerns in Brussels that Poland and Hungary could be the next to ditch the bloc.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has used the issue to suggest the bloc could split further.

He said: “The European Union only has a future if we can stay together in spite of our growing cultural estrangement.”
