A BRITISH carer fighting for his life is believed to have been looking for his hotel room in the dark when he fell from a second-floor balcony in Maderia.

Oliver Hillier, 26, took his mum Mary, 53, grandmother Maureen, 80, and nephew, Alfie, 12, on a summer break to the Portuguese island last month.

But the holiday quickly turned to tragedy when Oliver disappeared and was found having tumbled 20 feet from their room's balcony.

Cops think he was trying to find his hotel room in the dark and peering over the balcony when he accidentally slipped and fell, according to MailOnline.

And although the full circumstances surrounding the fall aren't clear, local authorities are not treating the incident as suspicious.

Caring Oliver looked after his mum and now his family, from Southwark, south London, fear she could be left without a carer.

They have launched a GoFundMe page in an effort to raise the cash to bring the former champion gymnast home.

On the page the family wrote: "This is our brother Oliver, he is on a life support machine after having surgery on his brain in Portugal as he fell from a 2nd floor hotel balcony on the 22nd July 2019 and is now in an induced coma.

"We still don’t know how it happened but the whole family are devastated.

"Oliver went on holiday with our mum, nan and his nephew to look after them as my mum is disabled and it’s my nephews first holiday abroad.

"There is nothing he wouldn’t do for anyone, he is the glue that holds us all together and to bring him home will cost £30,000!

"We need him home with us to bring the smile and laughter and light back into our lives.

"We all know it’s going to be a long road to recovery for him but being in a different country away from his family and friends just doesn’t bare thinking about."

Pictures from his bedside show Oliver hooked up to a ventilator with deep stitches across his skull.

His medical bills are covered by emergency European Health Insurance until mid-August, but he only took insurance cover out for his relatives, thinking "everything would be okay".

Beyond that date costs could run into the thousands so his family want to fly him home to be treated in a London hospital.

But even then doctors have to agree he is stable enough and an air ambulance and team of medics would cost at least £30,000.
