British Airways flight diverted after videos capture plane rocked by high winds in Gibraltar

Some British Airways passengers got more than they paid for when their plane began to rock back and forth wildly.

Pilots on flight BA492, travelling from London’s Heathrow airport to Gibraltar, aborted a landing Monday while facing extraordinary winds on Spain’s south coast.

The Airbus A320 eventually landed safely in nearby Malaga, Spain.

“When flying to Gibraltar make sure you take some extra underwear,” passenger Kristis Bubnelis posted on Instagram.

The field hockey player’s recording of the incident shows the wing of the plane repeatedly dipping and rising as the pilots struggled to maintain control.

“The plane was swinging from left to right and all you could hear were people shouting and screaming,” Ramesh Samtani, 65, told the Gibraltar Chronicle. “It was very scary and people were shouting ‘Oh my god’ and praying.”

“Due to strong winds in the Gibraltar area, our pilots decided to land in Malaga as a precaution,” a British Airways spokesperson told Rock Radio. “The safety of our customers and crew is always our number one priority.”

Passengers were eventually shuttled from Malaga to Gibraltar by bus.

Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) is listed by Forbes as one of the world’s most dangerous airports because the runway starts and ends at water and is intersected by a main street — Winston Churchill Avenue. Traffic lights stop vehicles from colliding with aircraft.
