The fishing industry is in line for a post-Brexit boost after shaking off Brussels red tape, ministers said yesterday.

They announced six fisheries management plans – blueprints on how best to manage fish stocks and keep businesses sustainable.

Covering some of the most popular species including crab, bass and king scallops, the plans will replace the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy.

Environment Secretary Therese Coffey said the reforms would help to build ‘a modern, resilient and profitable fishing industry underpinned by sustainable fish stocks and a healthy marine environment’.

Measures include removing the individual cap on the amount of quota that small vessels can use and ways of reducing unwanted catches.

Mike Cohen, from the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations, said the gains could be ‘absolutely huge’.

The six plans are subject to consultation with a further 37 to be announced later.
