Brit holidaymakers face new ISIS attacks in Mediterranean resorts this summer
The heads of MI5 and MI6 have revealed that jihadis could “target hotel locations to kill, injure or take hostage” people on the Costas and other holiday hotspots.
Details of the threat have appeared in a memo issued to British troops warning of the threat to military personnel and civilians abroad, and warnings have been issued by the Foreign Office (FCO).
It is understood that our spies have identified a terrorist hit list of targets including Spain and Turkey.
Greece, Tenerife and North African countries such as Morocco and Tunisia are also at risk.
Spain and Tunisia have previously suffered attacks. In June 2015 some 38 tourists, including 30 from the UK, were killed by gunman Seifeddine Rezgui at a beach resort near Sousse in Tunisia.
The department also said that at least five terrorist groups were operating in Turkey and warned that an attack was “very likely”.
The FCO added: “Attacks could be indiscriminate, affecting public buildings, major events or public gatherings.
“Be vigilant around significant religious occasions and public holidays.
“Terror groups sometimes call for attacks around these times.”
Details of the threat facing military families emerged in a Freedom of Information Request.
In the document, the MoD said: “We must in particular be alert to the possibility terrorists may seek to target hotel locations both to kill, injure or take hostage members of our armed forces or civilian staff.”
