Brit boxer heads to Asia for ‘brutal’ sport as bareknuckle boxing ‘too soft’

A hard-as-nails brawler is heading to Asia to fight because bareknuckle boxing is too soft for him.

Tony Lafferty, 32, is so tough he’s vowed to try brutal Lethwei, a bare-knuckle version of Muay Thai kickboxing where fighters use elbows, fists, feet and even their heads.

The Scot says he will be the first Brit to compete in the sport that’s huge in Myanmar.

The ex-soldier said: “I’m Scottish so head-butts are my strength.

“The only way to win in Lethwei is by knockout. If you get knocked out, you have five minutes to wake up. If you wake up inside those five minutes, the fight continues.”

Lafferty, from Stirling, also has a shot at a £10,000 pay day with a win over Dean “Smudger” Smith in their O2 bareknuckle scrap on November 16.

The fight comes at the end of Anti-Bullying Week, as he revealed he was a shy child who was picked on by estate bullies.

He said: “Every minute of every day I was scared. In the end I learned to stick up for myself.”
