‘Brit arrested in Ibiza after cyclist killed in hit and run’ as Jeep abandoned

An arrest has been made following a search for a car with British plates suspected to have been used in a deadly hit-and-run.

Police in Ibiza are understood to have the suspect in custody, with well-placed sources saying that they are British.

The man, known only by his initials SD at this early stage, is understood to have been apprehended on Wednesday night (June 28) following the incident the day before on Tuesday, June 27.

The vehicle, a black Jeep Wrangler, was later found some three miles from the scene of the collision, which claimed the life of a cyclist.

The deceased has now been named as sports and cycling enthusiast 49-year-old Bernat Ribas, whose funeral is set to be held on Friday (June 30).

The Jeep was later towed and investigated by forensic experts with a source stating in relation to the suspect: “He is from the UK.”

The Jeep is understood to have been involved in a head-on collision with Mr Ribas on Camino de Benimussa, a narrow road in the municipality of Sant Josep.

Descriptions of the Jeep, which was later found at an ecology and education centre, were given by a second motorist nearby and a friend of Mr Ribas, who was out cycling with him.

Six years prior, cyclist Dani Vinals was also killed in a hit and run on the island, an incident which Ibiza Town mayor Rafa Triguero referenced as he acknowledged the death.

He said: “It’s not only a cyclist on two wheels, because the many lives of many families are on a bicycle.

“We have just received another sad piece of news, following the loss of Dani not so many years ago.

"My sincerest condolences to the dead man’s family and friends and the cycling community.”

Sant Josep Town Hall said in a message of condolence: “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this moment of pain and we extend our most sincere condolences to them.”

Mayor Vicent Roig added: “I was very sad to learn that Bernat Ribas left us suddenly after this tragic accident.”
