‘Brilliant’ journalist, 24, killed by stray bullet that pierced bedroom window
A young journalist tragically died after a stray bullet went through her bedroom window.
Aviva Okeson-Haberman was found unresponsive in her apartment in Kansas City, the US, on Friday, April 23.
That day, she’d failed to respond to messages and a colleague decided to go check on her.
The 24-year-old was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead over the weekend.
Ms Okeson-Haberman joined radio station KCUR in June 2019 as Missouri politics and government reporter.
She was planning to move to the nearby city of Lawrence to start a new job before her death – and was looking at potential apartments just hours beforehand.
During her time at KCUR, the journalist covered stories on local corruption, medical marijuana, and inequalities in the distribution of vaccines.
The radio’s news director Lisa Rodriguez said: “Aviva was brilliant.
“Even as an intern, her approach to storytelling and her ability to hold those in power accountable paralleled many a veteran reporter.
“She was quiet, which made it all the more satisfying to hear her challenge politicians and hold her ground, even when people in positions of great power tried to belittle her.”

Ms Okeson-Haberman also had a keen interest in the foster care system, having spent several years in it.
Scott Canon, managing editor of the Kansas News Service, added: “She cared deeply about children in foster care and she also wanted to do the most thorough possible job understanding the state’s prison and its juvenile justice system.
“She was brimming with ideas for stories that she thought just might improve the lives of people who were up against the worst circumstances.”
Police officers have since launched a homicide investigation into the shooting.
Ms Okeson-Haberman is survived by her two younger sisters and parents.
Last week, a toddler was shot dead in Florida at his friend's birthday party.
Elijah LaFrance, 3, was found by Miami-Dade police with gunshot wounds at an Airbnb rental.
A 21-year-old woman was also shotand taken to hospital but is in stable condition, CBS4 reported.
