BREAKING: Queen announces Donald Trump will pay state visit to UK this summer
The US president will travel to Britain with first lady Melania Trump from June 3-5 where he will be officially hosted by the Queen.
Her Majesty had invited Trump to make the state visit, which Palace officials this afternoon announced has been accepted.
He may stay at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle for the duration of the trip as is the norm with state visits, but this has not been confirmed.
Announcing the news, Buckingham Palace said on Twitter: “The President of The United States of America, President Donald J. Trump, accompanied by Mrs Melania Trump, has accepted an invitation from Her Majesty The Queen to pay a State Visit to the UK.
“The visit will take place from Monday 3rd June to Wednesday 5th June this year. President Trump and Mrs Trump previously joined The Queen for tea at Windsor Castle in July 2018.”
The formal visit will come a year after Trump’s two-day working visit with first lady Melania in July 2018.
The president met Her Majesty for an hour-long tea at Windsor during the visit which was overshadowed by huge protests.
He and Melania shook hands with the Queen, but they failed to bow or curtsy to her in a shock snub on live TV.
And just yards away from the castle were anti-Trump protesters out in force holding placards and chants.
Ahead of Trump’s meeting with the Queen, he had described the monarch as being a “tremendous woman”.
The president had been promised the upcoming state visit by Prime Minister Theresa May after he was elected in 2016 – but no date was set.
A state visit is a formal visit by a head of state and is normally at the invitation of the Queen, who acts on advice from the government.
They are used by the government to further Britain’s national interests, and will involve a series of visits in the UK.
There is also usually a state banquet, which will see the Royal Family turn out in force – in garments and all — for a plush dinner with the guest.
A visit to – and speeches at – the Houses of Parliament are also sometimes included.
The Queen usually receives one or two heads of state a year, and has hosted 109 state visits since becoming monarch in 1952.
