A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the death of Keon Lincoln in Handsworth, Birmingham.

Keon's family paid tribute to the "fun-loving" teenager who "lit up a room with his laugh" as they spoke of their "profound grief" at his "senseless" loss.

A press release from West Midlands Police states: “We’ve arrested a 14-year-old boy after a teenager was murdered in Handsworth yesterday afternoon (21 January).

“The teen was set upon by a group of young people in Linwood Road just after 3.30pm.

“The boy, who lived locally, was taken to hospital but sadly died a short time later from his injuries.”

Detective Chief Inspector Alastair Orencas, from West Midlands Police’s homicide team, said: “The death of Keon has shocked the whole community and we have increased our patrols in the area.

“We are determined to apprehend those responsible for his death and bring them to justice, so I would personally appeal to anyone who is withholding information out of misguided loyalty to the offenders, to come forward.

DCI Orencas added: "A teenage boy has died in the most violent of circumstances and we urge you to give us any information you have.”

Speaking to reporters earlier, he said that the investigation into the tragic incident had progressed "at pace" and described the arrest as a positive step forward in the effort to establish exactly what happened in Linwood Road, Handsworth, on Thursday January 21.

“Yesterday’s events were shocking and tragic," he said. "My thoughts are with the boy’s family who are being supported by specialist family liaison officers at this incredibly sad and difficult time."

He went on: “We’re doing all we can to fully understand what took place, violence like this on our streets is heart-breaking and deeply concerning.

“I’d urge anyone who saw anything or has any information to contact us as soon as possible.”

The street where the incident is still closed off this morning as forensics officers comb the area for clues.

The suspects fled the scene in a white car which crashed into a house a short distance away. The vehicle has also been seized for forensic examination.

Speaking immediately after the incident, Det Chief Insp Alastair Oren's told reporters: “This level of violence in broad daylight on a residential street is inconceivable, let alone the fact that the target was a 15-year-old boy.

Neighbours say that the victm's mother, who reportedly works at a local school, has been left "inconsolable" by the tragedy.

In a statement issued by police, the victim's family said: "Keon was a fun loving 15-year-old who was full of life and love for his family and friends.

"He had an infectious laugh that lit up the room whenever he was in it. The family is grateful for the kind support from everyone.

"We seek the public assistance from everyone. We seek the public assistance in sharing any information that will help the police bring justice for Keon and closure for his family.

"Again we thank you for your support and kindly ask us for privacy as we grieve this devastating loss."

Another resident, who also wished to remain anonymous, said: "I know the mum to say hello to but I didn't know her children that well.

"They all seem like nice kids. The mum is inconsolable apparently, but that goes without saying. You can't imagine the pain she must be going through right now."
