Boulder shooting suspect set to return to court in late May

The 21-year-old Arvada man accused of shooting and killing 10 people inside a Boulder grocery store last week is scheduled to return to court on May 25.

Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa is set to appear in Boulder District Court before Chief Judge Ingrid Bakke on that date for a status conference, court officials confirmed Tuesday. It will be the suspect’s second appearance in what is expected to be a lengthy court process.

Alissa’s defense attorneys said at his first hearing last week that they needed time to assess his mental health.

The May 25 status conference is scheduled to start at 8:15 a.m. and last one hour.

Police and prosecutors allege Alissa began shooting people in the parking lot of the King Soopers in south Boulder on March 22, then went inside the store, killing a total of 10 shoppers, employees and a responding police officer.

He’s been charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder for firing on another officer.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty has said he plans to file more attempted-murder charges against Alissa for allegedly firing on Boulder and University of Colorado police.
