Boris Johnson dealt yet another blow as Larry the Downing Street cat ‘resigns’

Just when Boris Johnson thought it couldn't get worse… Larry the Downing Street cat "resigns".

The Prime Minister is facing yet more calls for his head – and bookies have even suspended betting on him resigning in 2022 – after senior cabinet ministers Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid both quit in the space of 15 minutes on Tuesday night (July 5).

Both resigned after a day of madness in which No.10 and the Prime Minister himself seemed to change their minds on what they knew and when about claims of Tory Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher's inappropriate conduct.

Sunak said “the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously”, adding “I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.”

And in an incendiary letter, Javid said the British people “expect integrity from their government” but voters now believed Mr Johnson’s administration was neither competent nor “acting in the national interest”.

And the big name resignations didn't stop there.

A parody Twitter account set up for the Cabinet Office's 'chief mouser' tweeted a picture of the feline at a photoshopped miniature podium in Downing Street alongside the caption: “I can no longer, in good conscience, live with this Prime Minister. Either he goes, or I do.”

Followers were quick to support the brave cat.

"I stand with Larry. #JohnsonMustGo" wrote one.

And another tweeted: "

The resignations came as Mr Johnson was forced into a humiliating apology over his handling of the Chris Pincher row after it emerged he had forgotten about being told of previous allegations of “inappropriate” conduct.

Mr Pincher quit as deputy chief whip last week following claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club, but Mr Johnson was told about allegations against him as far back as 2019.
