The Royal Navy Bomb Squad arrived at the house in Spencer Road tonight where they started carrying out examination.

It is not yet known what the items found are.

One local told Devon Live earlier that she hae been told by police to pack a bag in case her family were also asked to leave.

“My garden backs on to Spencer Road, so we have been told to prepare just in case we have to leave,” she said.

“My car is on Spencer Road and they have told me I am not allowed to move it at the moment. Police said earlier that a suspicious package was found but since they have said that there has been more than one.

“I think it is a bit shocking for something like this to happen so close to home and it does make you wonder who your neighbours are.

“I saw quite a few families being evacuated earlier and they were taking pets and their belongings.

“It has been going on all afternoon. Two ambulances arrived at around 3pm followed by three or four police cars and a riot van.

“That’s when they cordoned the road off.”
