Bomb squad called to ‘unexploded bomb’ that turned out to be fence post
All residents of a village in Cornwall were evacuated from their homes after one local spotted a suspicious item and raised the alarm.
The resident of Godolphin Cross, near Helston, discovered the strange item while gardening and informed her landlord, prompting Royal Navy bomb disposal experts to descend upon the scene on Saturday (July 30) at around 2pm.
The terrified occupants of nearby houses were forced to leave their homes as the mystery object was investigated, with Devon and Cornwall Police cordoning off a 200m area and asking people to relocate to the village hall while they investigated the item.

Kimberly Durant, who has lived in the village for nearly 30 years, was astounded when she returned home to find police tape everywhere.
She said: "We had time to gather bits and pieces and pets and food, and they opened up the village hall up the road for tea and coffee and things. People from the Red Cross turned up."
But it soon transpired that all of the worry was for nothing as the item in question wasn't a bomb, but an old fence post, and therefore not a threat to the wary inhabitants of Godolphin Cross.
A spokeswoman for the force confirmed the fortunate news that the item presented no danger to residents of the town.
She said: "We called the bomb squad and they came to assess the situation.

"And in the end it turned out to be a fence post. Better safe than sorry."
Residents were able to return home by 6.30pm – four-and-a-half hours after Royal Navy officials first arrived on the scene.
Godolphin Cross is home to about 700 people – meaning that evacuating the whole area was no easy task.
Durant added: "It is actually quite a big village so to go and knock on everyone's door took quite a while."
