Body of one of two missing fishermen found after trawler sank off Sussex coast

THE body of one of two fishermen missing since their trawler sank has been found.

Divers recovered Adam Harper’s remains from the wreck of scalloping vessel Joanna C on Monday night.

The news came as the mother of the other victim revealed the boat hit trouble when its fishing gear got tangled in whelk pots.

It had been thought a freak wave caused the accident, off East Sussex early on Saturday.

But Jackie Woolford, 56, said: “It wasn’t a wave, they got hooked on some whelk pots and the load shifted. Robert was trying to untangle it.

"It was a freak accident that lasted ten seconds. There was nothing anyone could have done.”

Her son Robert Morley, 38, of Pembrokeshire, was still missing yesterday.

But after Jackie was visited at home by skipper Dave Bickerstaff, 34, who was rescued after almost four hours in the freezing Channel, she said: “He died in the water.”

She added that Dave and Robert had clung to a buoy but that her son succumbed to the cold and disappeared.

Adam, 26, was of Brixham, Devon.
