A family in Benidorm escaped a fiery car by the skin of their teeth as thick black smoke billowed from the vehicle.

One onlooker, British DJ Zak Holland, 36, thought they had "heard gun shots" at the time of the vehicular fire on Monday (August 21).

Brit DJ Holland, who had previously spoken to the Daily Star about adapting to the Benidorm sun and the "unbearable" heatwave, says a family were left rushing out of their car after it caught fire.

The car fire, which occurred around 7pm on Monday, left a street in the Spanish resort covered in billowing smoke, with DJ Zak saying the place was covered in a cloud of black.

Speaking of the car fire, he said: "I was laid on a sun lounger on my laptop and I thought I’d heard gunshots and I looked round and I just saw thick black smoke."

Thankfully the family managed to escape the burning vehicle with their belongings before the flames spread to the interior.

DJ Zak confirmed the family "managed to get out of the car with all of their belongings."

The DJ from Manchester had already been battling the "awful" weather, which has seen temperatures across Europe rise well over 40C.

Fires in the Alicante region where Benidorm is located are frequent, as members of the Bomberos de la Dipu continually report billowing smokes and sudden fires across the party town.

Just yesterday (Thursday, August 24) a restaurant tucked away in an eleven-storey building in Calpe caught fire, with teams mobilised to quickly put out the fire.

Flames from the extractor pipe had caused "smoke to flow through the top floor of the building" and prompted police to evict diners from their seats.

Another fire in the blistering heat of Benidorm saw a vehicle catch fire, with Benidorm Park Consortium Firefighters putting out the CV-715, which was described as a "heavy urban autonomous bomb."
