The suspects are said to have “propped up” the corpse between them and dragged it up to the shop’s counter in Carlow, Ireland on Friday morning. The bizarre situation happened shortly after one of the suspects tried to claim the dead man’s pension at around 11.30am and was told that he would have to be present, according to reports.

After being refused, the suspect returned with an accomplice – carrying the older man – who was in his 60s and appeared to be supported by them, the Irish Times reported.

The younger men then asked to be given his pension payment.

Their request was refused and the pair later fled – leaving the corpse there, according to reports.

A woman living beside the post office claimed her daughter saw the two men carrying the deceased man into the building.

She told the Irish Independent: “She was leaving my house at the time and said the man looked unwell as his feet were dragging [along] the ground.”

The mayor of Carlow, Fianna Fáil councillor Ken Murnane, said he was “absolutely shocked” to hear the news.

He added: “I heard there was a commotion in the post office.

“I go by there all the time and it’s a very busy post office – normally there’d be a queue out the door there.

“I was absolutely shocked to hear about what happened.

“I cannot believe anyone would do something like that.

“It beggars belief, I’m just shocked.”

Local Fine Gael councillor Fergal Byrne added: “The whole town is in shock.”

The deceased was described as “a nice man by all accounts and someone who caused no offence to anyone”.

Mr Byrne said: “The staff in the shop are very shook up from it.

“I’d like to offer my sympathies to the man’s family also.

“It’s a bizarre and upsetting situation.”

A Garda spokesman confirmed that officers were investigating “all the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of an elderly male in the Carlow area”.

The Irish Examiner said the gardaí do not suspect any foul play in the elderly man’s death and suspect he may have recently died from medical causes.
