BBC Weather: Europe warned to brace for more ‘big thunderstorms’ and heavy showers

BBC Weather said the “very stormy” conditions endured across parts of southern Europe over the past 24 hours are set to continue this week. BBC Weather forecaster Tomasz Schafernaker said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms have been breaking out from parts of Iberia, through the Alpine region, the Adriatic with big thunderstorms developing around the Balkans as well.

“And this is likely to continue as we head into Monday as well. So, heavy showers developing again across this part of the world, bringing very big gusts of wind and also some hail too.”

The eastern Mediterranean are set to face better weather conditions on Monday, with hot sunshine across Turkey, Greece, the Greek islands, southern parts of Italy and Corsica and Sardinia.

But showers will begin to break out across northern parts of Portugal and Spain.

Mr Schafernaker continued: “ You can see around the Alps and it also remains very cool around the Baltic temperatures only around in the upper teens.

“You can see lots of clouds and showers as well.

“And that is likely to continue into Tuesday as well. A cool air stream coming straight south of Scandinavia.

“It means that these temperatures will be below average for the time of the year. Here are the showers once again breaking out in that heat across more southern parts of Europe.”

The BBC forecaster concluded the forecast and said while Madrid and Rome will be full of sunshine and soaring temperatures this week, Moscow will instead be more changeable with a chance of catching showers and thunderstorms.

For the UK, the Met Office has warned a band of heavy rain will strike the UK overnight and into Tuesday morning.

The barrage of rain hurtling towards Britain will firstly strike Northern Ireland and Scotland first before continuing south to hit parts of Northern England.

The temperatures are set to remain in the 20s in the south, whereas the north will see cooler temperatures closer to the high teens.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: “For Tuesday, it does look to be quite wet across northern parts, particularly for Northern Ireland and Scotland.

“Some of the rain will be pushing into Northern England and the Midlands.

“Further south though we will hang on to the drier conditions and perhaps some brighter spells too.

“There is more rain in the forecast later this week but it is also getting a bit warmer in the south and a bit more humid.

“Temperatures could reach the mid-20s but Wednesday or Thursday.”
