BBC Weather: Europe set for thunderstorms as Atlantic air sweeps in across continent

BBC Weather forecaster Darren Bett said the heat seen over the past few days will push its way southwards, keeping some parts of the continent in the scorching summer temperatures. But he warned: “Across northern Europe, it certainly has cooled down in all areas. We have got this Atlantic interference with more of a westerly breeze bringing more of some cloud and wet weather too.

“Mind you, these areas of cloud here have been producing some slow-moving thundery downpours.

“They are still around, actually, on Wednesday. And we could get a focus of them again towards the Alps.

“The heat is going to be building across central parts of Europe and into France, and it is still hot through the Mediterranean. Turkey through Greece and also Cyprus it should be dry.

“A few showers there across the Balkans into Bulgaria and Romania with not as many as we have seen, actually.

“For most of Iberia it will be dry. But those are the thunderstorms and showers there across the Alps.”

The BBC forecaster warned the cooler and wetter weather conditions will also push in over Germany, Poland and further northwards.

He added: “Now it may well turn a bit drier across Norway and Sweden on Friday.

“But the wetter and windier weather sweeps across the Baltic states and into northern parts of Turkey. We have still got some thunderstorms further south.”

Over the weekend temperatures soared across the continent, with the all-time records broken in Gallargues-le-Montueux in France to 45.9C.

For the rest of the continent, it will be dry and sunny. Mr Bett said: “It will be hot for a while in Paris but then we get the northwesterly breezes over the weekend and that will drop the temperatures.

“It stays hot and sunny in Madrid but also in Rome, with plenty of sunshine here. Not so much of that for Berlin.

“It is always going to be on the cooler side here. And turning wetter in Moscow.”

The Met Office has forecast a return in warm weather for the UK as temperatures build towards mid-20C for a weekend heatwave.

The majority of the UK can expect rising temperatures and sunshine. But the very north of England and Scotland will see cloud and wet weather as we continue through the week.

The Met Office’s Simon Partridge explained temperatures would be rising day-by-day as the UK builds towards hotter weather.

The Met Office meteorologist said: “We will see warmer air very slowly making its way further north as we go through Thursday and the second half of the week.

“Temperatures will build day on day very slowly so by the end of the week many parts of southern UK will be in the mid-20s.

“However, we will still hold on to these fronts up to the far north of Scotland, it will always be a bit cooler and damper especially on Thursday.

“Thursday is expected to be the wettest day of the week for Scotland, particularly for western areas but for the rest of the UK dry with plenty of warm sunshine around.”
