BBC weather: Bank Holiday freeze as ‘HEAVY SNOW’ to slam Europe in Arctic chill
The BBC warned of “wintry” and unsettled conditions in Britain as even more extreme unseasonable weather slams the rest of the continent. BBC meteorologist Sarah Keith-Lucas explained: “It’s a story of mixed fortunes across Europe for the next few days. Things are turning colder, quite wintry in fact, for many central and eastern parts of Europe.
“On Saturday, a cool feel to the weather across Scandinavia and the UK too with some rain and even some snow pushing out across France and Germany.
“Some late season snowfall right across the Alps.
“Heavy showers across Greece, Croatia and Italy too.
“A quieter picture across Spain and Portugal which should remain dry with some sunshine.
“But head north of the Pyrenees and there’s the cloud bringing rain and some snow flurries across the Alps.
“Some heavy snow showers.
“For Sunday, all that weather moves a little bit eastwards.
“So some heavy snowfall for parts of Austria, the Balkans still unsettled with some heavy showers.
“And it’s feeling petty chilly for many central and northern parts of Europe.”
Meanwhile, the Met Office forecast Arctic air to blast through the UK this weekend bringing freezing temperatures as low as -3C, alongside “wintery” and “thundery” showers in north-east areas
Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said: “We’ll see more showers coming in on this northerly wind, and it’s that northerly wind which will bring a chill through the weekend.
It will continue to bring a fair few showers around as well and it’s going to bring more of a frost as we go into the weekend as well.
“Gardeners take note, these are the temperatures in urban areas but in rural spots quite widely we could be down to freezing, maybe in some places as low as -3C.
“So it is going to be a chilly start to the long weekend, it’s not really going to warm up much throughout the weekend.
“Why so cold? Well follow the isobars they point all the way up to the Arctic and it’s this Arctic air driving south that will bring the cool feel.”
