Bar offers punters rapid Covid test and beer for £18 to help boost business

A bar in Copenhagen, Denmark, is combining Covid tests with pints of beer to help get things moving after the country's lengthy lockdown.

People in Denmark have only very recently been able to venture to bars and cafes again due to Covid restrictions in place and "corona-passports" are helping to unlock things quicker.

At the Warpigs Brewpub punters are charged around £18 to get tested in a booth and while they wait for the result they can enjoy a beer.

After about 30 minutes if they are given the all-clear, they are allowed inside to continue socialising and drinking, reports Reuters.

The Government in Denmark is also offering free Covid tests but customers at the bar said the paid-for versions, sold by the company Practio, let them avoid the queues.

Local Nicolai Marteens said: "We saw the line (at the closest testing centre) which was maybe an hour or two."

Denmark's "corona-passport" work by people providing their vaccine status through an app or via a government-approved form indicating if they have been vaccinated, previously infected, or have had a negative test in the past 72 hours.

The passport system is not only being used in bars but also museums, cafes, and restaurants.

From Wednesday, April 21 staff are expected to check all customers' Covid status and ensure they are allowed to enter.

The UK Government is also currently exploring what benefit Covid passports could have on lifting restrictions in the UK.

A number of trials are taking place in England to test the system including at the FA Cup semi-final and final.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "We are doing everything we can to enable the reopening of our country so people can return to the events, travel and other things they love as safely as possible, and these reviews will play an important role in allowing this to happen."
