Baby dies after parents attempt home circumcision in Italy – reports

A baby has reportedly died in Italy after his parents attempted to perform a circumcision on him at home.

Local media reports say that the five-month-old baby was taken to a hospital in Bologna by helicopter after the procedure.

The infant was having a heart attack as he was brought in on Friday and died that night.

The prosecutor’s office in the province of Reggio Emilia has opened an investigation into manslaughter.

The death follows a botched home circumcision in December that resulted in the death of a two-year-old in Rome due to severe blood loss. The boy’s twin brother survived the procedure thanks to intensive care.

The practice of circumcision is not widely practised among Italy’s majority Roman Catholic population.

However, many immigrants in the country from Muslim backgrounds do practice the procedure for cultural and religious reasons.

These families may often have difficulty accessing the procedure in hospitals, which may charge too much money or refuse to perform it on children younger than four.
