Author Katherine Rundell says kids’ books are a joy for adults too as she backs our Books For Schools campaign – The Sun

JUST because you have grown up, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t revel in the joy of a great kids’ book.

Children’s author Katherine Rundell, who wrote Rooftoppers, argues adults gain a lot from picking up titles aimed at kids from time to time.

Backing our Books For Schools campaign she said: “Maybe we start to feel it’s not serious enough to read children’s book. But it’s a terrible mistake — there is such wild joy in kids’ books.”

We have teamed up with HarperCollins to give away more than 100 new books from the Collins Big Cat programme, worth over £600.

The box includes books by top children’s writers David Walliams, Julia Donaldson and Michael Morpurgo.

More than 4,000 primary schools across England, Wales and Northern Ireland have so far registered.

Pupils will then need to collect 3,500 tokens — which we will start printing later this month.

'WILD JOY'

In her book, Why You Should Read Children’s Books, Even Though You Are So Old And Wise, Katherine says: “Children’s fiction offers to help us re-find things we may not even know we have lost.”

The best-selling children’s author, 32, from London, reckons that reading lets you live a thousand different lives alongside your own.

She says: “Reading with your kids is one of the best things a parent can do, it’s so important children see their parents reading.

“Making time to read can be difficult because we get very busy, but falling in love with reading as a kid gives you so many brilliant things.”

Katherine, whose latest adventure story The Good Thieves is out now, believes it is society’s job to encourage a love of reading.

She says: “We do everything we can to give children access to lots of different kinds of books, especially with libraries closing.

“The children’s laureate Cressida Cowell (author of the How To Train Your Dragon series) is campaigning to get a library in every school.”
