Supermarket giant Asda will be increasing its social distancing measures in a bid to stop the spread of deadly coronavirus.

Brits have been ordered to stay home for at least three weeks, unless they're shopping for essentials, seeking medical help, or taking up daily exercise.

From Wednesday, those shopping for essentials at Asda will have to adhere to strict social measures to ensure the safety of staff and customers.

The chain will limit the number of people entering its stores, with members of staff at entrances maintaining how may people can enter.

Customers will also be asked to only touch what they intend to purchase, and use cashless payment methods where possible.

ASDA's CEO and President, Roger Burnely, said: "It has never been more important for us to work together to keep our distance.

"I want you to know that everyone at Asda is working tirelessly to make sure you have the essentials your family needs and that you can shop in our stores safely if you need to visit us.

"We’re working hard to protect you and our colleagues."

He added: "Please help us to do so by following the guidelines in place.

"My colleagues in our stores are working under incredible pressure to serve you and I am hugely grateful to them for their efforts.

"Please be kind to them when you visit us. We’re all in this together."

The likes of Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl have face unprecedented demand for food in recent weeks.

All chains have had massive recruitment drives in order to fulfil the British public's orders, with Tesco reportedly offering Wetherspoons staff a place in shops.

Demand is a result of coronavirus panic buying, and follows a week of shoppers ransacking shelves and shortages of essential items.

Since then, all supermarkets have increased efforts and there is now special NHS and vulnerable people shopping times, as well as rationing on sought after items such as pasta, toilet roll, hand sanitiser and baked beans.
