The eye-catching work of top makeup artists has been showcased at this year’s German championships in Dusseldorf.
It features Game Of Thrones characters, an interpretation of Queen Elizabeth I and even a sabre-toothed version of mummy Ötzi the Iceman as part of the Ice Age-themed event.
Established professionals with at least three years’ experience under their belts competed for the Make-Up Award, with their focus this year being on ‘feminine power’.
But there was also a chance for lesser established artists to show off their talent in the Young Make-Up Talent Award.
It looked to those aged 24 and under to create suitable make-up on a theme called ‘Gentle Breeze’, which is displayed in the images below.
The championships were held at the Messe Düsseldorf today and yesterday and there were an estimated 20,000 visitors and 500 exhibitors.
Artist Lars Zand makes up a Game Of Thrones white walker during the German makeup artist championships in Duesseldorf, Germany, today. She applies the finishing touches to the cracked skin below the Night King’s horns
Another model is made-up into a long-haired white walker from the hit HBO television series. His design features heavy eye makeup which combine with thick-set eyebrows to shadow the eyeballs. Long blue lines meander up from the model’s lips and into his hairline to complete the artwork
A model is made up as Queen Elizabeth I by Janika Kreutzer of the Hasso von Hugo makeup artist school in Berlin. The work sees the model’s eye sealed over, with a bloody gash across it dripping blood down on to her nose. The model looks up towards Kreutzer as she applies make up to her cheek
Kreutzer’s finished piece on the British queen. Hasso von Hugo, who her school is named after, was considered the best in the world in the profession after he won a BAFTA for his work on the film version of Umberto Eco’s The Name Of The Rose, released in 1986
Elsa Strahl, a trainee from the Theatre of Ulm, makes up a female model into an ‘Ice Queen’ during the championships. Theatre Ulm is the oldest municipal theater in Germany, having been founded in 1641

Strahl makes up the model into an ‘Ice Queen’. This piece features long horns with platted hair wrapped around them, as well as decorative ornaments to sit on the model’s head. Strahl puts the finishing touches to the model’s eyes
The model is made up to look as an ‘Ice Queen’. In Game Of Thrones, it is a legendary figure known throughout the Seven Kingdoms. It is alleged to have lived not long after the creation of the Night’s Watch – 8,000 years ago
A referee (right) judges an ‘Ice Prince’ as he sits in a chair with his back to the crowd at the event. The character wears a regal uniform with a sash across the front as a Game Of Thrones’ Night King looks on from a nearby chair
Felix Jones of the Werkakademie Leipzig is watched by a judge as he airbrushes a model into an ‘Ice Prince’. He uses a piece of paper to direct the spray. Felix has 90 minutes to turn model Benjamin Blum into the character
Another angle of Jones airbrushing Blum into an ‘Ice Prince’. The work sees an apparently shaven-headed Blum coated in light shades of blue and white to fit the Ice Age theme
Jones continues to spray the airbrush on the model as his piece on the ‘Ice Prince’ takes shape. He has removed the paper template and sprays free-hand on Blum’s neck at the event today
Maria Meise of the State Theatre of Mainz starts to make up her saber-toothed Frozen Fritz – ‘Oetzi’. She covers his head carefully with a bald cap and starts to peel it away from the model’s face
Meise part way through making up ‘Oetzi’ today, as she paints he cheek a bright shade of orange. The well-preserved natural mummy this piece is based on was believed to have been a man born in 3345BC, who died at the age of 45
Meise takes a different line form the white walkers. She makes up a saber-toothed version of Frozen Fritz ‘Oetzi’. The mummy was found in the Ötztal Alps between Austria and Italy in September 1991 and is also known as the Iceman and the Similaun Man
Lydia Naumann of the German National Theatre of Weimar makes up her model into ‘a cold-hearted’. The model sits facing a mirror as the artist works with a sponge to finish of the headpiece
