AOC’s own constituents slam her over busted Amazon deal

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s own constituents say she blew it on Amazon.

A Siena College poll released Wednesday found that 58 percent of voters in her 14th congressional district, covering parts of The Bronx and Queens, supported the deal that would have brought Amazon to Queens in return for $3 billion in subsidies.

Only 33 percent backed the congresswoman’s position opposing the online retail giant, which promised to bring 25,000 jobs in return for the government money.

“From Minnesota to NYC, everyday people all over the country are organizing to resist Amazon’s predatory practices on working class communities,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in November, after Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio announced Long Island City had won a national competition to land a new Amazon campus.

Long Island City is represented by Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who back the Amazon project. Ocasio-Cortez represents neighboring communities.

Moreover, 57 percent of those surveyed said it was “bad for New York” that Amazon canceled the project in February following opposition from the congresswoman and some other local officials, including state Sen. Michael Gianaris.

Only 32 percent said Amazon’s withdrawal was “good” for New York.

“The district breaks with Ocasio-Cortez on the Amazon deal,” said Siena polling director Don Levy. “Even in the Queens area of the district, over half say losing the deal was bad and 54 percent would like it revived.”

Ocasio-Cortez objected to the tax subsidies provided to one of the world’s richest companies and complained about the lack of community consultation.

“We just can’t just be allowed to govern by bullying,” she said during a constituent event in Woodside last week.

The Siena College poll surveyed 607 voters in English and Spanish in the 14th CD from March 31 through April 4. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.
