At least 1000 anti-lockdown protestors have descended upon Melbourne’s CBD as simultaneous rallies take place across other capital cities.

The intersection of Flinders and Swanston streets was brought to a standstill about noon on Saturday as more than 100 police created a human barricade holding the crowd on Swanston Street.

The crowd shouted slogans such as “no more lockdown” and “Sack [Victorian Premier] Dan[iel] Andrews”.

People in the group of demonstrators let off orange-coloured smoke flares and beat drums as they walked up Bourke Street towards State Parliament.

Protesters also gathered on Lonsdale Street and there was a large police presence at Flagstaff Gardens on Saturday morning.

The location of the midday protest was unknown until it was announced via social media at 11am.
