Amsterdam’s red light district to axe ‘sex window’ workers for ‘erotic centre’

Amsterdam is to axe its famous 'sex windows' and uproot and relocate prostitutes to a state of the art 'erotic centre' packed with sex clubs.

City executives named a location in the Dutch capital's south as its preferred site for an out-of-town 'erotic centre', to ease congestion and bad behaviour around the historic De Wallen area, as well as purifying the image of the city.

Mayor Femke Ms Halsema plans for the building to be a safe, high-quality complex, containing within it sex clubs and pornographic theatres, among other attractions.

"The Europa Boulevard in the South district the most suitable location for the new Erotic Centre," the city's executive said, adding that the new site would be ready in around seven years.

"This choice will now be presented to the city council early next year," it added in a statement.

"Finding a location for an erotic centre is a difficult task," the city administration said, adding: "Due to the enormous growth in tourism, the old town, especially the red light district, has been under pressure for years."

It added: "Windows of the erotic center will only be located inside the building. In this way we want to combat sightseeing tourism and keep disruptive groups away."

Mariska Majoor, 54, a former prostitute who runs the city’s Prostitution Information Centre, previously said sex workers will feel "hidden away" by the new site.

And people living locally to the new site have raised objections, too, worrying that this will mean the transfer of anti social behaviour to their doorstep.

It comes after rowdy Brits were told to stay away from Amsterdam in a new advertising campaign aiming to curb sex and drug tourism.

Earlier this year, the council released a digital campaign aimed at 18 to 35-year-old men in the UK.

Locals have long complained of being kept awake by the riotous behaviour and finding themselves surrounded by tanked-up tourists staggering around with glassy eyes, including thousands of Brits.

Amsterdam's campaign – dubbed 'Stay Away' – targets people who search for terms including 'stag party Amsterdam' or 'pub crawl Amsterdam'.
