Alison Moyet says she’s leaving Twitter ‘for a good while’ after being trolled for saying she is ‘genuinely bereft’ by the Queen’s death

Singer Alison Moyet has again been forced offline after being hounded by Twitter trolls – this time merely for saying she was ‘genuinely made bereft’ by the Queen’s death.

Moyet, 61, is an outspoken voice on the platform, known for her witty parley with followers and she has pushed for left-leaning causes including nationalisation and higher taxes.

But after her heartfelt tribute to the Queen, she found herself receiving a backlash from anti-royalists – forcing her to switch off comments. 

Yesterday, the former Yazoo star posted she was ‘getting off Twitter for a good while now’.

In her original post, Moyet tweeted: ‘I am genuinely made bereft by the loss of our Queen. 

‘Now, more than ever, grateful that our nation’s figurehead is not a business politician or president for whom our collective wellbeing is sold for their profit. God bless Elizabeth II. Long live King Charles III.’

After receiving online abuse, Moyet wrote: ‘Don’t come at me for an angry splaff because I liked the Queen. A pointless waste of your young lives. Getting lairy with a random granny’

Moyet later posted that she was coming off Twitter ‘for a good while now’ following the backlash

She received sympathy from followers on Twitter, who pointed out there were some ‘truly hateful people’ on the platform

The post was met with a flurry of furious responses, leading Moyet to switch off all replies.

But some angry commentators still responded to Moyet’s follow-up posts. 

Dan Wieland posted: ‘Your tweet ended up on my Home Screen, how ’bout you keep unpopular or controversial opinions to yourself if you don’t want anyone to come at you.’

Another post retweeted a video of Robert Smith of The Cure talking why he thought the UK should abolish the monarchy.

Stephen Clark replied: ‘Sorry to see you go Alf. one of the great voices in a place that is sadly too often a cesspit of snarkiness and negativity.’

Grantus67 tweeted: ‘The problem is some people don’t respect your own beliefs and can be very disrespectful and hateful.’

Max Eldin-Taylor added: ‘I agree with the sentiment, Twitter can be like a black hole for energy and positivity.’

Moyet previously took a break from Twitter in July 2018 after tweeting that she objected to being called a ‘cisgender’ woman and received furious comments from trans rights activists.
