Alabama shooting: Gunman opens fire in football stadium injuring at least 10

The incident took place at the 33,000 capacity Ladd-Peebles Stadium in the city of Mobile. According to police two suspects have been detained and ten people injured. Video from the scene shows large numbers of police cars parked outside the stadium with their sirens turned on.

Witnesses reported hearing shots fired following “a fight in the stands”.

According to police the injured are all aged between 15 and 18.

Lenise Ligon, a local reporter from Fox 10 News, claimed police are attempting to identify the injured.

On Twitter she posted: “Police chief says it’s unacceptable for people to not be able to come out and watch their children perform.

“Police are trying to identify the victims – taken to multiple hospitals.”

Police were called to Ladd-Peebles Stadium late on Friday night following reports of an active shooter.

Ladd–Peebles Stadium is home to the University of South Alabama Jaguars, and also hosts a variety of other sporting and non sporting events.

In August 2015 between 20,000 and 30,000 converged on the stadium to hear a campaign speech by Donald Trump, then a Republican presidential candidate.

Williamson beat Leflore 10-0 in Friday’s game, which was completed before the shooting.

Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste commented: “It goes back to the idea that why are young people bringing this type of violence to public events?

“We’re going to have to be more aggressive on our end.

“We’ve got to make sure they understand we will not tolerate juvenile violence in our neighbourhood.”
