AIDS-infected doctor ‘passed on HIV to 400 children’
The physician was arrested in Larkana, southern Pakistan, after 400 kids and 100 adults tested positive for the virus.
The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) claims the “quack” medic spread it after re-using syringes with “no care in regards to infection control measures”.
Muzaffar Ghangharo is alleged to have started his deliberate campaign of infection in early April.
It was traced back to him after hundreds of people in the area began testing positive, officials say.
While cops are still unsure whether he knowingly spread it, he has been taken into custody while an investigation is carried out.
Among those infected are young children, who first came down with fevers and were later tested.
The NACP has organised a special team to help those affected after receiving help from the UN after the outbreak.
The organisation has described it as an “epidemic” and says it is helping patients “by providing all possible treatment facilities”.
Pakistan’s Health Ministry says the country has a registered 23,000 cases in the country, with officials stating it is mostly spread by unsterilised syringes.
HIV can be also passed on by unprotected sex and breast feeding.
