Active shooter reported at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, multiple people injured

Naval authorities are responding to a report of an active shooter at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii, a Navy spokesperson said Wednesday.

A shooting at the base was reported to authorities at about 2:30 p.m. local time, causing the facility to be placed on lockdown, the spokesperson added.

“Due to the ongoing security incident access and gates to joint base Pearl Harbor Hickam are closed,” Jackey Smith, of commander Navy Region Hawaii Public Affairs said.

A number of people were wounded in the shooting, Hawaii News Now reported.

One witness said he was at his desk said he saw the shooter in a naval uniform.

“I kind of recognize that as gunshots,” the witness said. “I looked out in time to see the shooter, who I assume was a sailor because he was in uniform … shoot himself.”

Civilians were among those injured in the shooting, the outlet reported, citing law-enforcement sources.

The FBI was investigating the incident, a spokesperson said.
