Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine at 3am UK time, realising fears among the West of a new war in Eastern Europe. Defence Committee chair Tobias Ellwood demanded further sanctions from the UK to cripple Russia’s power as he insisted a “no-fly zone” must be implemented to stop the advance of Russia on Ukrainian territory. Speaking to the BBC, Mr Ellwood said: “I’ve had conversations with Ukrainian MPs this morning.

“They want satellite telephones because communications systems are likely to go out.

“They need light weapons and so forth.

“We’re going to move into an uncertainty phase of this crisis soon, this is the sort of equipment they will need.

“Drones and so forth, things that can make Ukraine so indigestible, that’s the phrase they use, so miserable for any Russian occupation to last.”

He added: “But ultimately, they need support.

“The no-fly zone would be a gamechanger in pushing Russia, or making Russia think twice.

“At the moment, they’re igniting the West completely.”

Explosions could be heard in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv shortly after a televised address from Vladimir Putin, while explosions were also reported in the cities of Odesa and Kharkiv.

Mr Putin insisted in his address, early on Thursday morning, that his action was in response to threats from Ukraine, claiming that Moscow was not seeking to occupy Ukraine and insisting the responsibility for bloodshed lay with the Ukrainian “regime”.
