The extreme weather battering Britain over the last few days is set to continue this weekend, with some gales and heavy showers expected.

Forecasters at the Met Office predict winds to be especially strong in the north and west on Saturday, reaching up to 40 miles per hour.

However, temperatures will turn a little milder across the country after a chilly end to the week, with 14C expected in London and the southeast, and 13C in the north of Scotland.

The Met office outlook for today reads:

"Early cloud over western Scotland and Northern Ireland thickening to give spells of rain, heavy at times over hills. Elsewhere, mostly dry but fairly cloudy with just occasional brighter spells. Turning windier, mainly in the north and west."

"Evening rain over western Scotland and Northern Ireland moving slowly eastwards into the rest of Scotland, western England and parts of Wales. Clear spells and showers following into the west."

Sunday will continue the windy conditions, with more cloud cover forecast.

There is one flood warning in place today at the River Arun at Pulborough, in east Sussex. River levels in the area are still abnormally high after heavy downpours on Wednesday.

Storm Aurore — named by French meteorologists, who spotted the extreme weather pattern coming first — brought chaos and hectic flash floods for a number of other parts of the country this week.

Locals in Ferring, West Sussex, said on Thursday that their village had been battered by a 'mini tornado', as intense gusts damaged their gardens.

In Braemar, the mercury plummeted on the evening of wild weather, and snow was seen falling in the Scottish village.

Commuters in London and the southeast of England saw their journeys severely impacted flash flooding on Wednesday night, with a number of major A-roads and rail stations closed because of heavy downpours.
