13-year-old girl almost dies after doctors fail to spot massive brain tumour

A GIRL of 13 almost died after medics failed to diagnose a brain tumour and even suggested she was faking symptoms.

A GP, opticians and hospital docs all missed the growth which had taken over half of Lita Ruskin’s brain.

One medic said she might be feigning sickness so she could wear glasses like her big sister.

It took months before a specialist finally discovered Lita’s optical nerve was being squashed by the pressure of a 10cm by 8cm tumour.

She then had 17 hours of surgery at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool and a second five-hour operation.

Mum Emma Gilchrist, 39, from Stoke, said: “The surgeons said it was one of the biggest tumours they had ever seen.

“It was starting to push through her skull. If another week had gone by she would have died.

“It should have been picked up earlier.”

All that is now left of the tumour — believed to have been slowly growing since Lita was a baby — is a small mass behind her nose, which doctors continue to monitor.

The damage caused by the cancer has left her with behavioural issues and memory problems.
