1 injured after propane tank explodes inside vehicle at Halifax grocery store

A person is being treated by Emergency Health Services after a car reportedly exploded in a grocery store parking lot in Halifax on Thursday.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency (HRFE) said they were called to the parking lot of the Atlantic Superstore on Quinpool Road at approximately 7:09 p.m. to reports of a car exploding.

When they arrived on the scene, firefighters found a person inside the vehicle. They were extricated from the vehicle before the fire was extinguished.

The person did not appear to have any major injuries but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

HRFE believes that the person lit a cigarette in their vehicle which ignited a propane tank and caused the explosion.

Neighbours told Global News that they heard a big “boom” that shook their residence.
