Winnipeg looking for 2019’s Kid Mayor
Kids between the ages of eight and twelve have the opportunity to get an inside look at City Hall as Winnipeg’s next Kid Mayor.
The Kid Mayor contest, now in its second year, gives a lucky Winnipeg boy or girl the chance to shadow mayor Brian Bowman, pitch city councillors on ideas to improve the city, and even host their own press conference.
More than 250 applications were sent in for the 2018 position, with Nazar Viznytsya winning the gig.
“Being mayor is an incredible responsibility, and it carries with it very high expectations,” said Bowman.
“This initiative helps underscore the importance of the office of mayor for both kids and parents in a way that’s not only fun but educational.”
To enter, kids need to submit their idea of what they think mayors do, as well as what they would do to make Winnipeg a better place to live and why.
Written submissions should be under 250 words, and can be submitted online or by mail. Kids can also send in a video application if they’re able to do so.
Applicants need a parent or guardian’s permission, and can submit online at mayorbowman.ca/application until April 26.
