Keir Starmer has stormed into the lead in the Labour leadership race with 23 MP nominations on the first day of canvassing in the Parliamentary Labour Party.

It means the Shadow Brexit Secretary is the first candidate to get over the line wiht the 22 nominations needed to get on the ballot paper.

On the first day, Corbyn allies' favourite Rebecca Long-Bailey is second with just seven nominations.

Jess Phillips has six, Lisa Nandy has just two and Emily Thornberry has just one – while Clive Lewis has zero.

With just 39 out of Labour's 203 MPs declared, the candidates still have plenty of time to get to the line before nominations close next Monday at 2.30pm.

They then need either 5% of CLPs or 5% of union affiliates to get on the ballot.

If they get on the ballot paper there is all to play for – and the number of MP nominations will make no difference.

That is because the decision will be entirely in the hands of Labour's 500,000-odd members plus union-affiliated members who have until January 20 to sign up.

There will also be a window for people to vote as one-off "registered supporters" for £25. They will have 48 hours to register next week.

MPs can nominate themselves for the Labour leadership but none of the candidates have done so yet.

All but one of the seven MPs who nominated Rebecca Long-Bailey so far are new MPs elected last month. The other is Angela Rayner, her flatmate and deputy leadership candidate.
