‘What do you WANT?!’ Irish minister LOSES PATIENCE with MPs over Brexit
Prime Minister Theresa May suffered yet another blow on Monday as three ministers quit, including Foreign Office minister Alistair Burt, health minister Steve Brine and business minister Richard Harrington. They also backed a Commons amendment to give MPs a bigger say on leaving the EU, after they rejected Mrs May’s deal twice. But the Minister of State for European Affairs Helen McEntee says MPs need to take advise from their own experts and business groups to then “take on board when they’re voting”.
She told Newstalk’s Pat Kenny: “We know what they don’t want, we’ve known that for over two years.”
Ms McEntee added that while preparations are well underway for Brexit, there was only so much that could be done until a proper outcome is known.
She said: “It takes time to adapt and change.”
The minister then warned even an organised Brexit will still mean changes.
She said: “Even in a best case scenario there will be chances, people will have to adapt.”
This will require businesses to look at their markets and make new arrangements instead of being dependent on one market.
Ms McEntee said: “There’s something positive in that, but not the positive we want.”
She was also asked why Ireland had not seen a boost from more companies leave the EU.
But the minister replied: “Ireland got its share”.
Ms McEntee added: “There needs to be a complete restructuring of our economy.
“Either way this is not going to be good for our economy.
“I’m hopeful we can make this work.”
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar answered questions about Brexit when the Dáil met for the first time after the St Patrick’s Day recess today.
Speaking during Leaders Questions, he said the Irish Government would hold the UK to existing commitments in the Good Friday Agreement.
But he added no one is still fully knows yet what will happen at the border if there is a no deal Brexit, as the UK still doesn’t know what it wants to do.
