David Lammy urged Boris Johnson to learn from Emmanuel Macron amid the rising cost of living crisis. Labour’s shadow foreign secretary told BBC’s Sophie Haworth this morning that Britain should be following the French leader on taking action against the oil and gas companies. This comes as President Macron order the French state-controlled energy group EDF to sell cut-price energy to its rivals to stop price hikes.

Mr Lammy said that oil and gas companies can “bare this cost” instead of the general public

He said: “They did this in France.

“The French have just levied EDF 8.4 billion euros to keep prices down.

“We should be doing the same in this country.”

This comes as BP is forecast to rake in a profit of almost $4bn for the final quarter of last year, as revenues for the oil and gas sector sky-rocket.

As a result of President Macron’s policies, the French have only seen a four percent rise in energy bills compared to the whopping 54 percent in the UK.

In September, the French leader moved to cap power price increases at four per cent this year, passing the cost of a 44 per cent rise in energy prices onto suppliers.

Governments across Europe face taking decisions over soaring wholesale gas and electricity prices which are putting a strain on households.

Kwasi Kwarteng grilled by Trevor Phillips over energy crisis

In the UK, households will face a record energy bill increase from April after the regulator lifted the cap on default tariffs to £1,971.

An earlier exchange on Sky News saw energy minister Kwasi Kwarteng rebuke the French policies.

Sky host Trevor Phillips said: “Well since you have brought it up, in France I think that the rise is four percent?

“I mean it is 54-percent here! What have the French got that we don’t have?”

Mr Kwarteng replied: “The French are exposed to higher prices, they are also trying to scare a lot of people who are trying to invest in France.”

But he conceded: “But you are right to say the cost of living is an issue.”

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has sought to ease the cost of living struggle by announcing a £350 package to help those in need.

Mr Sunak said 80 percent of all homes in England will get a £150 discount on their council tax bill in April, while all domestic electricity customers will get £200 in October off their energy bills.
