Sunak uses Blair quote to ridicule ‘cocky’ Starmer over Labour’s policy farce

Rishi Sunak has used a quote from former Prime Minister Tony Blair to ridicule Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister’s Questions.  The Prime Minister mocked the Labour Party for a lack of policies, offering him advice in the wake of the local elections.

Speaking at PMQs, he said: “With regard to the local elections, maybe I can just offer the honorable gentleman some advice from one of his predecessors, Tony Blair, who I was reading the other day.

“What did Tony blair say? He said: ‘The right honorable gentleman can be as cocky as he likes about the local elections, come a general election, policy counts’.

“And we know Mr Speaker, the problem for him is he doesn’t have any!”

In response, Sir Keir said: “The Prime Minister said he was going to lose a thousand seats – and then he managed it! After thirteen years, a Tory promise they actually haven’t broken!

“And this is the Prime Minister who has only had to fight for two things in his life. Last year he lost a Tory beauty contest to the member for South Wes t Norfolk,  who then lost to a lettuce.

“And then last week, when he finally came into contact with voters, he lost everywhere. No matter who the electorate is, the Prime Minister keeps entering a two-horse race, and somehow finishing third.

“Given his track record, who does he actually think he’s got a mandate from?”

But Mr Sunak hit back: “Its a bit rich to hear about mandates from the person who has broken every single promise he was elected on!”

The Conservatives had a bruising day at the polls last Thursday, with Labour seizing battlegrounds from the Tories, including the Kent council for the first time since 1998.

The Tories lost 1,060 seats at the local elections, relinquishing control of 48 councils.

Meanwhile, Labour and the Liberal Democrats each gained hundreds across the country.
