Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak argued the EU’s taxation on alcohol makes no sense. While speaking on LBC, Mr Sunak praised his new Budget plan and the introduction of new alcohol taxing system. He insisted that Brexit has allowed Britain to step away from the EU’s way of doing things regarding taxation.

Mr Sunak said: “We have a system that makes absolutely no sense.

“We currently tax sparkling wine like prossecco, 28 percent more than still wine even if they have the same alcohol content.

“Now that we have left the EU we have the freedom to design a much better system of taxing alcohol.”

Mr Sunak then praised the new taxation the UK will see put into practice.

He said: “The system we have come up with has a simple principle, the higher the strength, the higher rate.

“It is a simpler, fairer and healthier system.

“It is also going to support pubs because we are going to have a new lower rate of duty for draft, beer and cider in pubs.

“Prosecco sales, sparkling wine sales in this country have doubled in the last five years.

“They are not the preserve of wealthy elites, I think it is actually totally misunderstanding the country to say that they are.

“One of the most popular things is Canti Prosecco or I heart Prosseco, about 7.50 a bottle.

“Lots of us, not me obviously as a non-drinker, drink.

“When good things happen in our life we want to celebrate with something and being able to cut 80 odd pence of that bottle is meaningful.
